We produce high tech polymer materials and implement cutting-edge processes to address some of today’s biggest global issues, from climate change to disappearing resources.

Let’s make products for everyday life

We’re one of the world’s largest manufacturers of premium quality, innovative plastics, developing over 10,000 products in three core areas: Polycarbonates, Polyurethanes and Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties. These teams combine their resources and expertise to constantly push boundaries and deliver revolutionary solutions for clients in a range of industries, from automotive, construction and electronics, to health, cosmetics, and fashion and sportswear.

Let’s make it global

As a former division of Bayer, operating as an independent business since 2015, we combine the spirit of a start-up with the expertise of an established global leader. This exciting mix encourages innovation driven by credible science, sustainability and economic viability. For example, we not only invented polyurethane in the 1930s, but also patented the first polycarbonate in 1953. And today, we’re still developing pioneering products, such as tough, waterproof, temperature resistant polyurethane coatings for firefighters’ uniforms.

With 17,000 people at 30 production sites around the world, we invest heavily in research and development. This encourages our different teams to work with each other and our customers in various industries to create brighter solutions. In 2016, our investment totaled around 259 million euros, leading to the registration of 190 new patents.

China is our largest market and plays a crucial role in our global success. That’s why we’re making major investments in the region. It’s also home to our dedicated Polymer Research & Development Center (PRDC).

Polymer Research & Development Center (PRDC), Shanghai - Let’s make a center for innovation

Our PRDC in Shanghai is the hub of a global innovation network, driving the development of new materials and applications. It’s a place where our customers and our people come together to take all our products forward. With technical services and training available across our three business areas (Polyurethanes, Polycarbonates, and Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties), it’s a true innovation hub.

And innovation goes beyond products and technology in China. In partnership with Tongji University, we’re developing initiatives such as a business plan competition and innovation days. This helps to promote creative thinking in areas such as innovation management, business model innovation and people development.

Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai (CISS)

The Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai (CISS) is located in Shanghai, China. It is the largest investment outside of Germany and the largest production site in Asia Pacific region.
The facility produces high-grade polycarbonate, polyurethane raw materials, and coating, adhesive, specialty chemical raw materials that are commonly used in construction, electronics, wood and furniture, and automotive sectors.

This plant features new eco-friendly technology developed in-house. A state-of-the-art technology used in these facilities allows customers to explore innovative approaches to productivity, efficiency and sustainability improvements.

Apart from Shanghai, Covestro also has production sites across the Greater China region in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Qingdao and Tianjin.

Let’s make award-winning innovations

What drives us is developing workable solutions for our customers that make the world a more colorful place. At the same time, we also want to make Covestro a brighter place to work in. And recognition for our advances always helps. For example, in China, we were awarded the Shanghai 100+ Enterprises in Green Supply Chain 2016.

In 2015, 2016 and 2017, we were ranked as top taxpayer in Shanghai’s Fengxian District, home to Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai (CISS). This emphasizes our contribution to creating local jobs, cooperation with local communities, and the efforts we’ve made to control emissions and improve energy efficiency at CISS.

We also gained the AICM 2017 Responsible Care® Chairman’s Award as well as the Sustainability Best Practice Award 2017 & Sustainability Influencer Award 2017 – Shanghai 2040 Innovation & Sustainability 2017 for our leading role in fostering a sustainable industry eco-system and efforts to strengthen public trust in the industry’s dedication to sustainable development.

Let’s make everyone part of innovation

At Covestro, everyone’s a potential innovator – production, sales or administration, as well as research and development. Join us and we’ll unlock your creativity by encouraging you to share thoughts, experiment with radical approaches and test new concepts to help us develop the materials of the future. You may even get the chance to present your ideas at our annual international Innovation Celebration, or develop them further as part of a team in the Covestro Start-up Challenge.
